THE ENSIGN...and...SOME CUTIES.

There are many magazines out there that one can subscribe to, but this is the one that affects my life in the most positive way for good. The articles and helps in it always touch and uplift my spirit. I would like to share a little article and a couple of thoughts from it.

THE GRAPEFRUIT SYNDROME

(This story is about and by Lola B. Walters)

My husband and I had been married about two years..long enough for me to realize that he was a normal man rather than a knight on a white charger..when I read a magazine article recommending that married couples should schedule regular talks to discuss, truthfully and candidly, the habits or mannerisms they find annoying in each other. The theory was that if the partners knew of such annoyances, they could correct them before resentful feelings developed.

It made sense to me. I talked with my husband about the idea. After some hesitation, he agreed to give it a try.

As I recall, we were to name five things we found annoying, and I started off. After many years of marriage now, I remember only the first complaint: grapefruit. I told him that I didn't like the way he ate grapefruit. He peeled it and ate it like an orange! Nobody else i knew ate grapefruit like that. Could a girl be expected to spend a lifetime watching her husband eat grapefruit like an orange? Although I have forgotten them, I'm sure the rest of my complaints were similar.

After I finished, it was his turn to tell the things he disliked about me. Though it has been more than half a century, I still carry a mental image of my husband's handsome young face as he gathered his brows together in a thoughtful, puzzled frown and then looked at me with his large blue-gray eyes and said, "Well, to tell you the truth, I can't think of anything I don't like about you, Honey."
Gasp!

I quickly turned my back, because I didn't know how to explain the tears that had filled my eyes and were running down my face. I had found fault with him over such trivial things as the way he ate grapefruit, while he hadn't even noticed any of my peculiar, and no doubt annoying, ways.

I wish I could say that this experience completely cured me of fault finding. It didn't. But it did make me aware early in my marriage that husbands and wives need to keep in perspective, and usually ignore, the small differences in their habits and personalities. Whenever I hear of married couples being incompatible, I always wonder if they are suffering from what I now call the Grapefruit Syndrome.
~~~~~~~
I love that little story, here's another thought from the Ensign...
THE GIFT OF PRAYER
by Richard G. Scott
"Prayer is a supernal gift of our Father in Heaven to every soul. Think of it: the absolute Supreme Being, the most all-knowing, all-seeing, all-powerful personage, encourages you and me, as insignificant as we are, to converse with Him as our Father....
"It matters not our circumstance, be we humble or arrogant, poor or rich, free or enslaved, learned or ignorant, loved or forsaken, we can address Him. We need no appointment. Our supplication can be brief or can occupy all the time needed. It can be an extended expression of love and gratitude or an urgent plea for help. He has created numberless cosmos and populated them with the worlds, yet you and I can talk with Him personally, and He will ever answer.
(I so believe every word of this and I know my prayers are heard and answered. One last thing I wanted to share with you out of this magazine, the Ensign. As this world rolls along with it's many worrisome things that are happening, hold on to this good and true thought.)
Your future is not determined by the conditions around you. It is determined by your faith, your choices, and your efforts. Yes, you live in challenging times, but so did all the people in the scriptures that went before you. You don't have to be carried along in the current of the times. The Lord can and will help you set your own course. The challenges you face will serve to strengthen you as you move forward with your life. Each of you has a bright future, a future you cannot now fully comprehend.
There are no better days than these days, because "these are your days" you are here on this earth at this time for a reason. You have what it takes. You have skills, knowledge, and natural talents given to you by God.
The reason I am confident about all of this is because I know that the Lord lives and loves us. He is the reason each of us have a bright future. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13). Because we are children of our Heavenly Father and because of the Atonement of Jesus Christ...I know our futures are bright.
We went to visit our littlest grands this past weekend...
Sophia in a little gold angel dress we gave to her.
I think she likes being in just the bloomers the best!
And we had to go and check on our little grands, Caleb and Ella.
They have been in the hospital with RSV and pneumonia! They
were there 2 days and nights...it was so scary! They got a fever,
and within about 2 days they got so sick. They are dong a bit better
now and are at home. It was great to get to cuddle and comfort them.
It's a bad time for sickness right now...everyone take real good care of
yourselves and your families. It seems like some real strong viruses
are out there. I will be glad for Spring to come!
First off, I hope those two sweet grand-kids heal up very quickly. I hate to see children sick. It breaks my heart. That second photo of Sophia cracked me up. She looks so comfy and happy. Thanks for this nice post. I can't believe you two have been married for 50 years. You look so young. Hugs, Deb=^..^=x5 (Hope Bob is doing well)
I am glad the little grands are doing better. It is so hard to see little kids be sick!
It's a good thing you are there to cuddle and love cuz there isn't anything better than a grandma cuddle. They're magical!
Oh, I hope those babies recover quickly. RSV is so potent and scary!
OH my goodness, Julie 50 years! you must have married as little babes... it's a wonderful thing! rah! And I LOVE the Grapefruit Syndrome...I will always remember that story from here on out, for the story that was personal about Ron peeling the grapefruit, and because it reminds me not to have a "sour" attitude about my sweet hubby's quirks...He says the same thing about me, when I ask him to name some things that make him uncomfortable or irritate him.. sweet sweet men...God bless 'em.
And oh I know you were all traumatized to have the cherubs in the hospital...scary..so glad they are home again. Thanking the Lord.
HUgs to you girl. Thanks for sharing all the wonderful and inspiring stories and encouragement. I also like to read Billy Graham's publication Decision. Full of Good STUFF!!
50 years, Wow!!! Congratulations! You have 25 years on us...We'll be celebrating our 25 in a few weeks!
That little angel of a granddaughter makes me want to nuzzle her cute little belly!
Sorry about the other two, I feel so bad for the little ones when they are sick..Working with preschoolers I see a lot of that and wish the parents were better at keeping them home when they're sick!
I love the Ensign and find great comfort in reading each article, The Conference edition is my favorite!
I am so glad your grands are home and doing much better. I bet they loved you there comforting them and their parents got some relief too... They looked darling in their hospital gowns.
The ENSIGN is my favorite magazine and I enjoyed both of the messages you shared. The Grapefruit Syndrone is a great one to remember and to practice!!!
I can't imagine not having the knowledge I could pray at any time and at anywhere. It is such a comfort to know Heavenly Father is so aware of each one of us and wants us to be happy.
Sophia is adorable!
Thanks for a beautiful post.~♥
My apologies Julie, I must have read that part with my brain in neutral. I thought it was a mis-print. Hugs, Deb=^..^=x5
Laugh OUT Loud...So sorry I got the mix-up going between the writer of the article and YOU, Julie...
I was having no problem with it except the "over half a century" part, and I'm going....what the????
Did they marry as young teens??????
NOW I'm getting it... :-) :-)hahahah...But the hubby saying he couldn't find a thing wrong about his wife just made me think that it would be something your Ron would say about you... :-) Two lovebirds. Hugs to you, and thanks again for the story. It makes me smile.
Julie,
I love this post! Eleven years ago when I was serving my mission, a bishop of one of the wards I was serving in shared this story. It was during a time that I was REALLY struggling with my companion, and put things into perspective so nicely. I asked him for it, and xeroxed it to fitin my scriptures knowing it would be helpful when I would be married. I cannot begin to tell you the number of times Ty and I reflect on this story to take an "inventory" of our relationship with one another.
Thank you for always sharing your heart and testimony.
Take care
Glad the little grands are doing well. Soooo scary! Were they at Primary Childrens? If so they were in great hands. So happy to have it in our neighborhood. Love to read the Ensign every month. Such a great pick me up. Love the grapefruit story. It's exactly what I tell my kids, ignore the silly stuff with your spouses. In the end it doesn't matter at all! Mimi
What an excellent post today. My hubby never seems to find fault with me. Now I have learned from his example to overlook the things that I thought bothered me. LOL
Your grands are so sweet ... praying for the little two that are sick. I know it is scarey for the entire family. God is with you and them my friend.
Oh NOOO!!! That is very scary that those little ones had to spend that much time in the hospital! So sad for them ... and the parents too!
I love that story about the grapefruit. I remember a friend of mine told me once that if she knew how awful the noises her husband would make as he aged, she never would have married him! (Oh boy!) But that is certainly a wonderful lesson for all of us - married or not! :)
What a cute photo of your little grand daughter! The dress is adorable but she also is adorable in just her bloomies! So glad your other two little ones are home and doing better. I have one down with flu and am hoping she won't go into that RSV. She went to the doctor today and she said she will probably have a few rough days. I hate it when my grand kids are sick, I wish I could be sick for them! Like you I would throw myself in front of a bus for them!
Loved the grapefruit story!
Julie the babies are just adorable.
Thank you for putting out this info on the Ensign. I referred one of my readers to a talk by Elder Holland. She loved it, it helped her, she went online and has been reading Ensign articles ever since. She and her husband read a new article together every night. She said they are now addicted to the Ensign! LOL! I sent them a two year subscription for sharing their sweet story with me.
Take care, B
Hi Julie!
I also love the Ensign, such wonderful articles and words of wisdom to live by! I am the 4th Sunday RS teacher, so I use it often!! Love the articles you shared - I am trying to be a kinder, more gentle and loving wife, mother and grandmother - noting hurts as much as harsh criticism and fault finding.
Prayer . . . where would we be without the opportunity to talk to our Father in Heaven when we need comfort, healing and peace. Praying daily is what keeps me going some days.
Your little grands are so adorable! What a little ham Sophia is, she is just beautiful! So happy to hear that your Caleb and Ella are well. What a scary experience for their parents and grandparents! Again, prayers go up, blessings come down!
Thanks for the uplifting post!
Hugs,
LOVED the Grapefruit story. TOO CUTE!!! I think imperfections and differences in us is what keeps our Marriage healthy. Hubby and I call them "Quirks" and it's what makes us "individuals"!!! We've been together almost 40years, and Married 36... AND by the way, that hubby WAS eating the grapefruit correctly, it's the rest of us that aren't eating it right, hehe!
Hugs to you,
I enjoyed reading the grapefruit story so much, and it has a great lesson. the article on the gift of prayer was wonderful too. I will check this magazine out thanks for the site address.
I am glad that the grands are out and doing well, It is so hard when children are sick, and I do agree there are some real strong viruses out there, as I am on my third week, and am having a hard time getting rid of mine.
Your blog book turned out beautifully, and it is the second one I have seen today, I am now thinking of doing one for us the end of this year. I would like to ask some questions and advice, if that is okay.
As always I enjoy the photos of your family, those grandkids are adorable.
Thank ou so much for your thoughts and prayers, you are such a wonderful blessing to me.
Therefore, on that subject, I do hope your grands continue to get better and stay out of the hospital. What is going around is nasty!
Your littlest grand in that gold and oh my goodness, how precious~ what gorgeous photos!
Last, (I think) is I so appreciate the blurb on charting our course through this troubled world...after reading by blog on HATE you can imagine this world and all that is 'wrong' with it bothers me tremendously so it was very refreshing to read that...now I need to internalize it as well.
thanks again...
First, I am glad your little ones are doing better!!!!! What darling babies.
Second, I love the Ensign too. When I first read the Grapefruit Syndrome I just laughed because it was so me, and so my husband.
One day a million years ago I was complaining to my MIL that papa would never take out the garbage.
She said " so what are you going to do divorce him? He's never going to change."
I started taking out the garbage.
Hi Julie,
Loved the "Grapefruit story"...My husband is home today (recovering from poison oak), I read him this post. We were both saying,...Ummm we can see trouble coming, with sharing EVERY thing that annoys you with your spouse!! :} The story ended with making that point I believe. What a great story to share! Beautiful!
Your sweet grands are always adorable to look at! I will say a prayer for your two little ones to recover fully. I am sure having you there to cuddle with them helped them to feel better!
There sure is a bunch of bad stuff going around. My husband got a flu shot (with his shot for poison oak) due to the doctor recommending that for him. Poison oak wears down your immune system and we have some really bad flu viruses going around right now! I am glad the doctor thought of that precaution!!
